Unforgettable class trip to Edinburgh, Scotland

30.09.2019

Day 1: We are ready for landing
In the morning of the 16th September, 2019, we, the class 8b, started our class trip to Scotland. At 6.45 am we met at our school. It was still cold, because it was very early. The bus came at 7am and took us to the Baden-Airport. The airport was very little so we couldn’t get lost. We arrived there at 8am. We waited for our check in and some of us ate their food. When we were able to check in, we handed our suitcase in. The next stop was the security checkpoint. We went through the security lock and some of us were scanned. Following that we waited in the sitting room for our flight. Our plane should come at 10.25 am, but it was late and came around 10.50 am. So the excitement was rising. Everybody was excited, and for some people it was the first flight. Finally, we could enter the plane. In the airplane it was very tight. Nearly everybody had to search for their seats. But that was a bit difficult because there were so many people. During the light some of us listened to music, slept or talked to others. The flight was quite pleasant and not so long. Our arrival in Edinburgh was at 13.40 pm. At first we got our suitcases and got a bus that drove us to a bus stop near the hostel. It was a very cool bus, because it had two floors. From the bus stop we walked to the hostel. We were all happy, that we were in Edinburgh. In the hostel we put our suitcases in our rooms. The hostel was great. The rooms were large enough and we were really looking forward to our first night with the classmates.
After our arrival in the hostel Miss Wink and Mr. Hellmuth wanted to take us to the beach because it was pretty warm today. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it there because the first bus driver didn’t take us (too many of us) and the second one just stopped for a few seconds and drove away again. So, no beach for us today. Instead we walked up Calton Hill from where we had a wonderful view over the city. You were also able to see the sea, so at least we could look at it from some distance.
Back in the hostel we had dinner and our first games night. We played different games but our absolute favourite was “Meuchler”. From now on we played it every evening.

Day 2: Fun in Edinburgh
On the 17th September, it was the second day in Edinburgh. We woke up at 7 am. And got ready for breakfast. After that we had a tour with our tour guide Sandra. We saw very interesting things in the Old & New Town. During the tour we saw some places from the film Harry Potter, for example we saw the grave yard. J.K. Rowling, the author of the book, got inspired by the names on the grave stones. Some of her characters are named like them. Next we went to the supermarket Tesco to buy our lunch. We made a little pick-nick in Princess Street Garden. After that we went to Edinburgh Dungeon. It was very scary and we screamed a lot but it was very nice. There were also a free fall tower and a little boot tour. In the evening at 5pm we had one hour free time to go shopping. And at 6pm we had dinner in the hostel. It was very yummy. Then we had free time in the hostel till 9pm. Then it was time for bed, we had to go to our rooms and had to sleep. Of course we were allowed to talk a bit.

Day 3: Hike on highest hill in Edinburgh
On Wednesday, the 18th September we met some Scottish and Danish students.
As always we woke up between 6 am and 7 am. After we got ready we had yummy breakfast. Before we went with the bus to the Rudolf-Steiner-School we walked to the supermarket Tesco Express to get our lunch. When we sat in the bus, we were very excited and already thought about what to expect. At 10am we arrived at the private school. We were welcomed by “Misses Mac Haffe”. She showed us the whole school campus. It was very fascinated because the school is very different to ours. For example: they have a lot of gardens and strict rules. Did you know there’s even a kindergarten there? We didn’t. After that, we played games to get to know the exchange students better. That was really exciting and especially very funny. We were a little astonished because the students looked very mature for their age. Andrew, the teacher of the Scottish students, led us to a park. The park was very big and we even saw a golf course. There we had our lunch. When we were done we hiked up the highest hill of Edinburgh called: St. Arthur’s Seat. That was very exhausting and slippery, but in the end we all made it to the top. On the top we had a breath taking view and took nice pictures. On the way down we lost each other because some students walked very fast. But don´t worry, we found each other quickly again. When we were back in town we had again nearly two-hours free time till it was time for dinner in the hostel. Although this day was exhausting we enjoyed it a lot!

Day 4: Individual museum visits during free time
On Thursday 19th September, we started at our hostel and went to the Marry King’s Close. The tour was about Edinburgh’s closes (little streets) and what life was like there back in the 17. century. During the tour we learned what life was like in the Old Town. For example, how they lived and about the pest. The tour was very nice and interesting.
After the tour we had free time in many groups. Our duty was it to visit one museum of our choice during our free time. We took the people’s story. There you could learn something about the ordinary people’s life in Edinburgh in the past and in the present. Most of us visited the museum of Scotland. There was a lot to see. You have three levels full of different exhibitions. Apart from the history of Scotland you were also able to see history of the whole world. Also a lot of future exhibitions are held there. The fact that you were able to participate (try out things yourself) really was favoured by most.
After the museum visit we went to our favourite shops. Where would you like to go in your free time? Many groups went to Mc Donald’s to eat something. At 7pm we had to be back in the hostel to have dinner together. For our last dinner we had Bolognese. When our tummy was full it was time for the last games evening. Again, we mainly played “Meuchler” but some of us also enjoyed playing card games.

Day 5: Leaving this wonderful city
Today was our last day in Edinburgh. We got up at 7 am and got ready and ate breakfast. Then we went upstairs and packed our stuff. After that we cleaned up our rooms, because the rooms were very dirty and messy. At 10 o´clock we met in the tent, we listened to music and talked about the murderer (we played a murder game during our stay). Helena Henrich was it.
Miss Wink and Mr. Hellmuth gave us information about the day. Next we took our luggage and walked to Tesco. There we bought our food for the day, like everyday. We went to the bus and drove to the airport. When we arrived we checked-in and left our luggage there. Then we had a short break before the security check. As we were there we got 40 minutes free time in this huge airport. It was very crowded and busy we enjoyed it. Our boarding started at 2 pm. Unfortunately, we had a delay because some passengers missed the flight and their luggage had to taken out of our plane again. We were a bit worried about our luggage. We hoped the take the right one out and not ours. Luckily, back in Germany everyone got their luggage back. Now, we are sitting on the bus on the way home and celebrate a bit with music. We hope our parents are already waiting for us. These five days in Edinburgh were very beautiful, funny and we will never forget this amazing trip.
P.S. Thank you Miss Wink and Mr Hellmuth for planning this perfect trip!
